Oh, I think Capshaw as really annoying, and I think that he wanted her that way. I wonder, have your read the recent thread here about the virtues of Temple of Doom? There was some pretty passionate defenses of that movie in there. I am not one of them though.

Oh she's annoying alright-and I know that was meant as a contrast to the strong Marion character in Raiders, but she's nowhere annoying as all those bloody kids! (I notice Short Round and Willie didn't get invites to Indy's wedding!)

Actually I asked John Rhys Davies why he didn't end up doing a cameo in KOTCS in that scene when I met him last year-he told me that he WAS asked to do a green screen scene so they could slot him into the live action, but as it meant he didn't get to interact with the other actors he turned down the offer.

Oh, this is new - I knew he'd turned it down, but I'd read just that he thought it would be too "dismissive" of the character, not anything about him not getting to interact with the other actors. Thanks for the info!

My best friend videotaped the entire conversation and when we walked away he said it was one of the most bizarre things he'd witnessed-his mate (me) chatting to a movie star about his tax bill!

JRD was a perfect gent-I've waited years to meet him as he doesn't do that many signings and he was great. I also asked him about not appearing in the Hobbit movies-this was what led to the discussion about taxes, as he was telling me about his homes in NZ and in the US.

He's up there with some of the other favourite stars I've met-Jeremy Bulloch, Anthony Daniels, Brian Blessed and Burt Reynolds-all very chatty, funny and charming.

Yawn.

I (sort of) agree. I just brought him up because so many other people have such a passionate hatred for the character. I knew he would be brought up at some point or other.

I've made my thoughts and feelings about the prequels known in other threads....

ADDED: Here are a few --- Tanya Roberts' character ("Stacey Sutton") in A VIEW TO A KILL and Kim Basinger's ("Vickey Vale") in BATMAN. Britt Ekland ("Goodnight") in THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN also comes to mind.

Good choices, I thought, though Kate Capshaw was not for me particularly irritating, at least no more so than the movie itself. I might throw in Christina Nigra, the little girl in segment #4 ("Nightmare at 20000 Feet") of TWILIGHT ZONE THE MOVIE -- "No smoking!" though she was actually supposed to be irritating, which sets her apart from the irritators in the OP's list. Definitely I would include Shelly Duval, Jar Jar Binks, young Anakin, Chris Tucker in FIFTH ELEMENT and that screaming girl in the Cruise version of WOTW (again, the whole film qualifies)... Fun topic. I'm sure I'll think of some others.

It's because he was a liberal character. Dan hates liberals with a passion and makes his feelings known on a regular basis.

No stones thrown here. I thought the Ethan character was written and played as gratuitously hateful, and as such his turnabout in the end was a total non sequitur, and not believable. (I thought his Thomas Dunson character in RED RIVER was similarly unlikeable and unsympathetic and not convincingly redeemed in the end.) John Wayne was pretty much a stick figure persona for me, at least until a couple of his later roles (IN HARM'S WAY, THE SHOOTIST) where he finally began to show some dimension.

If we were reflecting about the ten most annoying film score tracks, I would nominate "anything played by Toots Thielemans" at the top of the list.

I see Ethan Edwards' turnaround as recognizing Debbie as the last vestige of his brother's dead wife, Martha, whom Ethan loved...and Martha was in love with Ethan; look how she tends to his coat in that beautifully composed scene when the house clears out and the only sound is Max Steiner's sensitive and delicate underscore.

I think it took real guts for John Wayne to go against his established screen persona with that role, especially in a time when leading men almost never did so.

IMO there's a fine line between a character who's supposed to be annoying but can still win over the audience and a character who is just annoyingly portrayed and whom the audience dreads seeing on screen because they're just crap. We don't "love to hate" them; we just hate them.

He's a serial killer - he's supposed to be annoying.

Thanks to everyone for all of the replies. Just a reminder that the choices are not mine but those of a 14 year old movie lover who prepared the article and told me of why he chose them. Feel free to fire away at them though, as he doesn't know anything about this site. I did write the by-lines however, some taken from his comments, others improvised but only on those I saw myself.

I especially appreciate your alternative suggestions even those I don't necessarily agree with.
There are a few that I would have substituted on Mr. X's list (he asked to be mentioned as such) so perhaps I'll do another 10 at some point. His article seems to be quite a hit in a controversial sort of way.

Lastly, Mr. X and I have made one or two small references to the actors in the by-lines but we tried to focus on the characters instead. I would therefore suggest that actors one dislikes across the board, might be better suited for another thread.

Right, and I did draw the distinction. The little girl was perfect and I thoroughly enjoyed her portrayal of a loud-mouthed, opinionated little pain in the ass.
